...in fact, do not do 'contests'.

In a networking group of online artists and fans, it is incredible to think this kind of thing has to even be said. I can only assume people who still do it realize it is a terrible form of taking advantage of "hungry"(desperate) artists -- which I am most certainly NOT -- and simply do not care how unethical it is. The insult on many levels is apparent.

AMEN Bruddah! :w00t!:

I used to go to Websites that are solely based on these "contests" for Freelance Artists and Designers and such. It's always the WORST Designs that win everytime (every now and again a good or halfway decent one gets recognition). One website I was contacted by one of the Mods. Around this time (a few years back) I was already wary and burned out on these types of sites so I wasn't interested at 1st but for some reason I changed my Mind and got an Acct with the site. All of a sudden I began winning a few Contests fair and square, which I liked (unlike most sites that have some stupid Social Media voting system this one had the Contest Holder judge it).

Well 1 Day I submitted for a Contest that was about $1000 or $1200 or so and I knew I would win. During the middle of the Voting portion where the Contest is CLOSED someone just popped up outta nowhere and ended up winning the Contest in the end. I was confused and during the Voting period I sent a note to the Mods of the site alerting them of what happened (this person NEVER entered the Contest UNTIL the Voting Process) and received no response--NOTHING. That made me even more suspicious because everytime I sent them a note they replied almost instantly, now they're ignoring me.

After this Scam happened (which I believe this "member"--who just joined recently at the time--and the Mods were in cahoots to win this somehow) I spoke to the Band who held the Contest. They explained to me that they were told this Person had issues uploading the Video hence why it was submitted in the middle of the Voting period. That was a weak excuse to me, if that was the case then why did I have no problems uploading my submission? Plus nobody else had issues NOR were any of us given a E-mail mentioning said System Errors. Then when the Band made some dumb comment about they gave it to that person because they had the most views on YouTube and likes on FB I was done with them along with the site. People can't be this stupid or gullible dude.

This site is a very good resource on the perils of doing "spec" work: www.nospec.com/

Err... Am I understanding "art contest" in a wrong way? What is so bad about it?

I heard of it, and even in worse form - the artist should've assign a price himself, not knowing other artists' price, not knowing is it too cheep or to expensive comparing to others. So the customer could chose the best of the cheepest, or someone who just don't know the today's situation on the market.

I think the tender is reasonable if the customer is a big player of the market and if he names the price. For example, the customer is city government, the order is the Christmas design of the main street, the price is ***$. Show us your project, the winner will decorate the city.

Twenty artists draw your commissions.
You pay only one, the "winner".

Ahh, THAT kind of contest...
Ok then, I agree. But among my circle of contacts it's usually called "tender". And "contest" is more like sports competition, participating in contests is considered to be an interesting challenge to yourself, and winning is something to be proud of.

It seems the only way to learn for most is to get burned by the experience — and some do not learn even then.
