Falling or ascending -- what ever direction we're heading in, odds are we're dragging everyone in that same direction to some degree. But with that knowledge that our direction is connected, also comes the natural instinct to take the direction that pleases those around us most. Might seem submissive, but that is the nature of understanding, and there's nothing wrong with having an understanding.
