I heard a US soldier who supported the war in Iraq... saying that he no longer supported it because it has become a failed humanitarian mission. It never occurred to him that he should stay and clean up the mess he made.

We sent men like that into a nation they don't understand with heavy weapons. No wonder so many are dying needlessly.

Unfortunetly the way things have been screwed up there is no way to fix it.

A. We have established a government in Iraq that we must recognize as legitimate.

B. In order to truly do any good we need to have more support in country to actually bring enough stability to restore living conditions including, water, electricity, sewer, basic health care, police & public safety, and education among others. Until we do that we are the ones who destroyed those services when we came in with our "shock and aw" campaign-a very shortsighted and stupid strategy when we entered Iraq and we are the ones, not Saddam, to many Iraqis who messed up Iraq.

C. In order to bring in those extra troops and resources we either need to get permission of the Iraqi government Or we need to over throw that government. The latter option we cannot do as we were the ones who established that government.

In the end, the way the Iraq War was carried out from the beginning has been botched to the point that the situation is basically irreversible. The problem with today's political leadership (Both democrats and Republicans) is that their view is too short sighted and without any attempt to understand the cultural and social situation on the ground.

When the fight isn't worth fighting, you have to be strong enough to just move on.

This is why I'm ignoring you.

Actually, the Iraq government, from a few things I read, has made it clear they want us out of there, as do most Iraqi citizens.

Anyway, just wanted to point out about the comment about the pic that one of the main problems for troops and their families alike is that they don't really know what they're fighting for. Originally there was the motivation of making it clear to terrorists that we weren't going to put up with having our homeland attacked. However, once the move was made in Iraq, it didn't take a genius to figure out that it had nothing to do with what we were originally focused on. All anyone was hearing (and pretty much still getting fed) were lame cover-up excuses as thin as paper.

While in the world wars we were fighting to protect and to keep our country safe, in the Korean war and Vietnam war, there wasn't the same validation. Everyone, troops and families alike, knew we especially didn't belong in Vietnam (can't say much about Korean since I don't know as much about it), and at the beginning our men weren't even aloud to shoot unless they were being shot upon, and even then the line was iffy. So many lives were lost over stupid, useless pieces of land (check out the movie Hamburger Hill. Unfortunately 'Nam was filled with fights like that), and some of the higher-ups seriously cracked under some of the things the people in DC were telling them to send their men into.

This war isn't much better. Hell, it's almost worse. At least this time around we're not putting the blame on our troops, who are just doing the best they can with what they're given. Yet when you can't even give the troops a legitimate reason to want to fight... a legitimate reason why the guy next to them who they've shared stories of their families with and who they've come to depend on had been gunned down... a legitimate reason why they're taken hostage and tortured... wouldn't you just want to get your ass out of there and back home to your friends and loved ones, too?

This government screwed up big time in its decisions, not the troops. Unfortunately, the government isn't all that good at taking responsibility and cleaning up after itself. Let's hope this presidency brings the change we need, that will actually make us proud to call ourselves Americans for the first time in ages.
