I think the problem we're facing in society as a whole in regard to religion is that too many people identify themselves by their faith. People stop seeking answers and start seeking self-justification, self-support, unity -- which can lead to the kind of pride that blinds.
Religion is supposed to be about humility, self-negation, and love/respect of other living things. Such things should not require declaration, denomination, or grand ideas of cultural unity. Don't allow religion to take over cultural functions.
Your religion cannot justify your existence, only your better actions can. Stop fighting over religion, you only make your existence a burden to the rest of us.
Religion doesn't require a position of power, and it shouldn't have one.
